Overview
This learning collaborative will guide participants through strategies to reduce physician administrative burden in ambulatory medical practices and processes to facilitate change. Utilizing evidence-based practices and AMA STEPS Forward® resources, participants will learn how to stop unnecessary work and start sharing the necessary work of health care delivery through physician-led didactic sessions and collaborative, interactive group work and best-practice sharing. Topics include de-implementation tactics, reducing regulatory burden, team-based workflows and system improvement in clinical operations.
Learning objectives
Following this Learning Collaborative, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and prioritize opportunities to reduce administrative burden in their own practice or health system.
- Build a business case for reducing administrative burden for the purposes of engaging key leaders and gaining buy-in to initiate change.
- Design and implement tactics and processes to reduce sources of administrative burden within ambulatory practice.
Participants
This collaborative is most appropriate for practice and health leaders trying to reduce administrative burden across one or more ambulatory care sites, and those with 25 or more physicians within the organization.
Each organization is required to have at least two, but no more than four, participants in any of the following roles:
- Chief medical officer or relevant regional or local delegate (regional directors, practice directors, medical director, administrative director)
- Chief nursing officer or relevant regional or local delegate (regional directors, practice directors, administrative director)
- Chief wellness officer or leader
- Chief operations officer or relevant regional or local delegate (physician leader or administrative leader)
- Practice manager or administrative director with operational oversight responsibility

Format
This Learning Collaborative will take place over the course of seven months and will comprise four virtual sessions (60 mins. each) and one in-person session at the close of the program. The in-person session will take place at AMA Headquarters in Chicago. Lunch, snacks and refreshments will be provided. Participants will be responsible for airfare, incidentals and overnight accommodations.

Registration fee: $800/organization
AMA members: AMA members (group or individual) are eligible for a discounted rate of $480/organization.

Faculty bios
Kevin Hopkins, MD, family medicine physician, Cleveland Clinic, and physician director, health system engagement, AMA
Dr. Hopkins is a recognized leader and national speaker in the fields of caregiver burnout and ambulatory practice redesign and transformation. In addition to his director work with the AMA and Cleveland Clinic, he holds an academic appointment with Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, teaches within the Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program and is a faculty instructor for the Cleveland Clinic Global Leadership and Learning Institute.
Jane F. Fogg, MD, MPH, physician director of organizational transformation, AMA
Dr. Fogg is a physician leader and executive with broad experience leading health care delivery, focusing on primary care, systems redesign and value-based delivery models. Prior to her current position with the AMA, she was the executive chair of internal medicine at Atrius Health, an innovative value-based health care leader in Massachusetts and a member of Optum.
